World's Second Largest Diamond Uncovered.

World's Second Largest Diamond Uncovered.

A 1,111 carat stone was uncovered in the the Karowe Mine about 500km of Gaborone, Botswana by the Lucara Diamond Corporation.

This is the second largest diamond found since 1905, when the cullinan diamond was unearthed in South Africa weighing 3,106 carat. The culinan was cut into 9 separate stones, most of them set in the British crown Jewels.

Other two exceptional white diamonds where also found in the Karowe Mine; a 813 carat stones and a 374 carat stone.

The stone has not yet been evaluated yet however it has the potential to become a very expensive stone as per the comments of Kieron Hodgson, a mining analyst.

Botswana is the largest producer of diamonds in the world and the trade has helped it expand into middle-income nation.

The stone was found using a gadget called the "Large Diamond Recovery XRT" machine. XRT stands for X-ray transmission. The specialized devices have been created to sort out valuable stones from waste rock. A sensor system inspects unsorted material as it goes through, by looking out for the unique diamond properties which rocks don't have. Similar sorting systems can also be used for gold, limestone and coal.

Several large stones have been mined using this modern equipment.
