The rarest of natural fancy colored diamonds, red diamonds are so scarce that most traders and jewelers have never set their eyes on a natural red diamond.
The colour red however has perhaps the most effect than any other colour. It is accepted as a stimulant and red is naturally exciting, increases enthusiasm, stimulates energy, encourages action and confidence and provides a sense of protection from fears and anxiety.
In Russia, red represents beauty; in Sweden, red was set aside for the privileged class; in China, red is related with good fortune; in India, a red mark on the forehead brings good luck. For the Hindu, red denotes joy, life, energy, and creativity and in Singapore too, the colour red traditionally symbolizes joy. For the Aztecs, red dye was considered more valuable than gold itself and Feng shui suggests that the front door of a home if painted red invites prosperity to the residents and the energy of red is that of arousal; it is hot, passionate, rich and celebratory.
In our language a ‘Red letter day’ is a memorable and joyful day; the ‘Red carpet treatment,’ makes someone feel special, and considers them as a celebrity and ‘Painting the town red’ is synonymous with celebrating and partying.
In Western society Red is the colour of love and romance, courage and passion and driving a red vehicle says you are vibrant, sexy, speedy, forceful and loaded with high-energy. Even in the garden its appearance has an energetic effect.
Red in our sense of taste and smell is associated with passion and seduction. The aromatic, sweet succulence and deep red colour of strawberries brightens up the flavour and a esthetics of any meal.
Natural Fancy Red Diamonds are highly sought after and only a few have been given the grade of pure red and usually they come combined with other hues and are graded as Brownish Red, Pinkish Red or Purplish Red.
The Moussaieff Red Diamond (formerly called the Red Shield Diamond) weighs 5.11 carats and is a triangular brilliant cut, graded as Fancy Red by the Gemological Institute of America. Although relatively small compared to other famous diamonds, the Moussaieff Red is, in reality, the largest Fancy Red natural color diamond the GIA have rated to date.

The mystery and story behind this famous stone is that is was found by a Brazilian farmer in 1990, in the area known as Alto Paranaiba, a source of large and fancy-coloured diamonds. As a rough stone, it is assumed to have weighed 13.9 carats. The diamond was purchased and cut by the William Goldberg Diamond Corp. and around 2001, the stone was purchased by Moussaieff Jewellers Ltd. The Moussaieff Red was displayed as part of the Smithsonian's "The Splendor of Diamonds" exhibit, alongside The De Beers Millennium Star and The Heart of Eternity.
